FAQs
What is the purpose of the Israel Fund?
The Israel Fund was established to strengthen the personal and family bond to the Jewish state and our ancient homeland by encouraging meaningful travel and extended stays in Israel. The fund is intended to support experiences that deepen identity, connection, learning, and engagement with the Land and People of Israel across generations.
Can I use the funds for organized programs such as Birthright, Masa, or group tours?
Yes. Approved organized group programs, educational programs, and tours that take place in Israel are eligible expenses.
Can I use my funds for a wedding or bar/bat mitzvah in Israel?
Yes. Family celebrations that take place in Israel — including weddings, bar mitzvahs, and bat mitzvahs — are eligible uses of the fund.
Can I use my funds to visit friends and family and just hang out?
Absolutely. Hanging out and living like a local is a perfect way to get to know Israel and use your funds.
Can I use my funds for study in Israel?
Yes. Funds may be used for tuition, accommodations, and living expenses related to studying in Israel. Israel has great universities, colleges, bootcamps, seminaries, and all manner of educational programs to take advantage of.
Can I withdraw cash while I am in Israel?
The fund operates strictly on a reimbursement basis. This means expenses must be supported with valid receipts. Direct cash withdrawals are not permitted.
Can I use my underage child’s account for a family trip to Israel?
Yes. If your child is under 18 years of age, you can get reimbursed for a family trip that your child is part of. Likewise if you send your child on an organized trip to Israel. As long as the expenses can be attributed to your child’s time in Israel, the expense is valid.
Can I use the money for travel to Hawaii or another destination?
No. The funds in your account are exclusively intended for travel to and stays in Israel, which is the Jewish homeland. Eligible expenses must be directly related to travel, living, or participation in experiences within Israel.
What if I don’t currently have any interest in traveling to Israel?
That is completely fine. There is no obligation or deadline to use your funds. You may leave the money in your account indefinitely, and it will continue to remain invested and reflect account activity over time. You are welcome to use it when and if your circumstances or interests change.
Can I use the funds for flights purchased in Israel for travel to a third country?
No. The funds may only be used for travel to Israel and for expenses that take place within Israel. Flights from Israel to other destinations are not eligible.
Can I gift or transfer my funds to someone else?
The funds are primarily intended for your own travel and for family or friends who accompany you. If you really don’t see a way to use the funds personally, you may transfer your funds to your children or to another existing account holder by submitting a written request to the fund administrators.
Can I donate my funds to charity?
At this time, no. The fund is intended specifically for personal and family travel, experiences, and stays in Israel, not for charitable donations.
How do I see how much money is in my account?
We provide annual statements in early January that show how many units you have, their value on December 31st of the previous year, and how much their value has changed over the past year. We also calculate an Internal Rate of Return, which is how much your investments earned on an annualized basis taking into account deposits and withdrawals that may have occurred over the course of the year. We currently don’t show balances online, however, you can contact the administrators at any time for your account’s current value.
Do I need to report income earned in the fund on my annual taxes?
No. For now, any interest and capital gains realized on the assets of the fund are reported on the tax returns of the administrators and paid by them. As far you you’re concerned, the money grows tax free. We will keep this arrangement as long as feasible.
Can I deposit cash into someone else’s account as a gift, such as for my child, niece or nephew?
Sure, if they are account holders already. Just coordinate with the Fund administrators. If your intended recipient is not yet an account holder, please discuss with the Fund administers to see if they are eligible.
